High school brawler, Hanamichi Sakuragi, has problems finding a girlfriend. The last fifty girls he approached have all flatly rejected him; so when the sweet Haruko Akagi doesn't shun him the way the others have, Sakuragi becomes hopelessly smitten by her.
Haruko is keen to have Sakuragi join her brother's basketball team. Not wanting to disappoint her, Sakuragi reluctantly does so. However, Sakuragi has never played basketball before, and it doesn't help that the team's rookie star is stealing Haruko's attention away from him.
